Online discussion & Q&A

Today, our economy is in the midst of two major industrial transitions; the green, and the digital transition. Both of these transitions offer potential to move us beyond our current macroeconomic context of stagnant productivity growth, falling living standards and dependency on fossil fuels. Yet while there is a general desire across the political spectrum that these transitions be pursued, history shows us that managing industrial transitions can be challenging. However, using these transitions as a means of supporting the growth of our regional economies, reducing inequalities between people and place, and creating good jobs, is part of how we might best maximise the economic opportunities of these transitions.

As part of our current research programme, which you can read more about in our recent blog, we will publish papers and run webinars exploring both transitions, starting with the green transition.

The first 40 minute online discussion brought together research, policy and practice-based perspectives to outline the context of the green transition and its crucial, and urgent, need to support the development of our regional economies, and how policy can support a wide distribution of work and opportunity across places.

Speakers:

  • Ross Mudie, Senior Research Analyst, Centre for Progressive Policy
  • Daniel Turner, Head of Research and Analysis, Centre for Progressive Policy
  • Dr Leanne Wilson, Energy Accelerator Programme Manager, North East Combined Authority

This topical online discussion is of interest to those working in or with green and net-zero policy agendas, green industries, and green skills, including policymakers, researchers, organisations, businesses, and networks that were keen to learn more about the green transition. Attendees were invited to pre-submit questions when booking or post questions during the webinar.
